Each year, teachers attend two vertical team meetings and two full days of advanced training in course content led by expert teachers, College Board Consultants and university faculty. In addition, ongoing support and assistance is provided by Master Teacher Dr. Terry Eder.

Music Theory teacher training objectives:

  • Deliver ongoing quality training that is content-based and specifically designed for AP success.
  • Develop an atmosphere of collaboration among the teachers including the sharing of ideas, teaching strategies and educational materials through guest lecturers and cultural experiences.
  • Research, test and implement computer software, musical equipment and web technology in the classroom.
  • Explore opportunities for student and teacher enrichment at local cultural centers and university sites.

Our first teacher training for the 2011-2012 school year was held at the Winspear Opera House on September 24, 2011. We were pleased to welcome guest workshop leader Dr. Michael Levi. Dr. Levi is Director of Graduate Studies for the Music Department and Associate Professor of Music at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York and a College Board AP Music Theory Consultant. He was also co-editor of the College Board publication AP Vertical Teams Guide for Music Theory.

Our first teacher training for grant participants was co-led by Dr. Blaise Ferrandino, College Board Consultant and Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Texas Christian University, and AP Music Theory Table Leader, AP Music Theory teacher Brandon Pedigo.
